  • Hinge Joint

  • 4 (dorsiflexion/planarflexion, inversion/eversion, supination/pronation, adduction/abduction)
 

Inferior Tibiofibular Joint

Type

  • Syndesmosis (fibrous union)
  • Holds the distal tibia and fibula together, forming a mortise for the talocrural articulation.

Subtalar Joint

Type

  • Composite joint formed by 3 separate plane articulations between the talus and calcaneus.

Function

  • To allow dampening of the rotational forces from weightbearing and maintain contact of the foot on the ground

Degrees of Freedom

  • Supination (adduction, inversion, plantarflexion) and Pronation (abduction, eversion and dorsiflexion)
