Joints
Talocrural Joint
Type
- Hinge Joint
Degrees of Freedom
- 4 (dorsiflexion/planarflexion, inversion/eversion, supination/pronation, adduction/abduction)
Inferior Tibiofibular Joint
Type
- Syndesmosis (fibrous union)
- Holds the distal tibia and fibula together, forming a mortise for the talocrural articulation.
Subtalar Joint
Type
- Composite joint formed by 3 separate plane articulations between the talus and calcaneus.
Function
- To allow dampening of the rotational forces from weightbearing and maintain contact of the foot on the ground
Degrees of Freedom
- Supination (adduction, inversion, plantarflexion) and Pronation (abduction, eversion and dorsiflexion)
